Veden mystinen olemus on kiehtonut Stennettiä pitkään.
Kaikki maalaukset on tehty öljyväreillä puulle.

Adam Stennett presents new oil paintings and works on paper at Gallery Poulsen from May 26- June 30.
In his first one-person exhibition in Copenhagen, Stennett expands his exploration of the human condition both in terms of scale and the imagery of the work. In some of the largest paintings he has created since 2007, Stennett envelops the viewer in a liquid world of reflections, refractions, distortions, and light. These hyperreal paintings play with ideas about inner and outer perception and duality. We need water to live but it can also kill us. It can instill calm but also panic. It can be beautiful and soothing but also treacherous. Clean water has become, more and more, a commodity. When figures are present they interact with the water in ways that are open-ended allowing for multiple and complex readings. A series of smaller but dynamic, black and white works on paper occupy the back gallery and play off the larger, color oil paintings in the main space.
Humans, throughout history, have been intrigued by the depth of water, and its reflective, distorting, and ever-changing qualities. Water has generated myths about its ability to induce visions, open portals, and expand the normal limits of consciousness. Water has been seen as bridge between physical and spiritual and has been associated with contemplation. This new series of paintings is, among other things, a meditation on that history.
Adam Stennett was born in Kotzebue, Alaska in 1972, grew up in Oregon and lives in New York. Stennett explores notions of utopia/dystopia through painting, video and multimedia works including a recent endurance performance at Pioneer Works called the Arctic Artist Survival Shack. His work is included in numerous public and private collections and has been widely exhibited in both, national and international exhibitions at venues including Centro de la Imagen in Mexico City, the Portland Art Museum, the Chelsea Art Museum, the Hudson Valley Center for Contemporary Art, and The National Arts Club as well as at a variety of established galleries. Stennett's work has been reviewed and featured in publications such as The New York Times, The Los Angeles Times, The New York Sun, Frieze, Art In America, Bomb Magazine, Contemporary Magazine, Whitehot Magazine, BlackBook, New York Magazine, The New Yorker, Harper's Magazine, and Esquire among others. Stennett has lectured and participated on panels as an artist at Georgetown University, School of Visual Arts, NYU Tisch School of the Arts, New York Film Academy, Hunter College, and Willamette University. Stennett is a founding faculty member of School of Apocalypse in New York.
